AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DIESIS WITH ASSEMBLED SAINTS AND CHURCH FESTIVALS, YAROSLAVL, 18TH CENTURY. A large, complex and finely rendered icon of the type generally ordered for a special occasion or person. The central or main upper portion depicts an ornate Diesis image with Christ enthroned and flanked by the Mother of God (left) and John the Forerunner (right) atop highly stylized clouds. Further out still are the archangels Michael (left) and Gabriel (right). Below are a gathering of 28 selected saints each finely rendered with ornate gilt embroidered vestments, no doubt a group of saints favored in the district in which the icon was produced or destined. The top margin and sides painted with seven additional images including five church feasts. From upper left clockwise they are: The Birth of the Mother of God, The Nativity of Christ, The Crucifixion, The Resurrection and the The Raising of Lazarus, all major Church feasts. There is an addition of two Marian images, The Unburnt Thorn bush Mother of God, and Praise of the Mother of God. The distinctive pallet and ornate style with gilt highlights reflect the Kremlin Armory School style made popular in large part by the noted iconographer Simon Ushakov (1626-1686) and found in icons produced in Yaroslavl as well. 13.9 inches x 12 inches (35.5 x 30.5 cm)
Estimate:  $5,000 - 7,500
Price Realized: $12,000.00
