AN IMPOSING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE TIKHVIN MOTHER OF GOD, 18TH CENTURY. Finely painted in the traditional Byzantine style, the garments of the Virgin and Christ child with extensive chrysography. The entire image overlaid with a later (1859) ornate silver repousse riza with attached gilded haloes. The riza embellished with paste stones, hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1859 and with Cyrillic makers mark BM- for Vasily Markov, and with 84 silver standard. 18 inches x 14 inches (46 x 36 cm)
