A LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON AND FRAME DISPLAYING THE DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD, 19TH CENTURY. At center, an icon of the Dormition overlaid with a machine engraved silver riza, hallmarked Moscow 1899-1908, Cyrillic makers mark EK for Emelyain Kuznetsov and 84 silver standard. The massive gilt-bronze 16 point star shaped frame overall embellished with paste cabochons and winged cherub heads. The central exposition window flanked by two adoring angels with painted features and above, God the Father, also with painted features spreads His hands and a dove upon His chest-symbol of the Holy Spirit-points downward towards the icon below. Such substantial frames were prominently displayed inside large churches or cathedrals. The style of God the Father in the offered lot relates stylistically to the same image in the main dome of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior Moscow. Diameter 28 inches (71cm)
