A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE VLADIMIR MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1840. Finely painted in the Italianate or Western style, Mother and Child depicted in a tender cheek-to-cheek embrace illustrating probably the most recognized miraculous icon of Russia. The entire image overlaid with a substantial and spectacular multi-piece gilded silver riza, repoussed in the Rococo taste with scrolling foliage and shell motifs. The upper left and right corner displaying the Greek abbreviation ΜΡ ΦΥ for Mother of God. The heads of the Virgin and Christ child encircled with brilliant sunburst-form haloes. The riza hallmarked St. Petersburg, dated 1841, with Cyrillic makers mark T.C. and 84 standard. 13.25 inches x 11.5 inches (33.5 x 29.4 cm)
