A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1825. Fully and finely painted in the Italianate style, the Mother of God holds the infant Christ and gestures towards him with her right hand showing the viewer the way to salvation. Christ holds a scroll in his left hand (a sign of his wisdom) and with His right hand delivers a blessing.  The entire image overlaid with an exceptional heavy gilded silver repousse and chased riza. The borders repoussed in floral swags and the corners set with silver winged cherub heads. The heads of the Virgin and Christ encircled with brilliant silver haloes embellished with paste stones. Riza hallmarked Moscow, dated 1833, Cyrillic makers mark С.Ж and 84 silver standard. 13 inches x 11 inches (33 x 28 cm)
