A FINE CARVED IVORY FIGURAL TRIPTYCH, MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS, FRENCH, 19TH CENTURY carved in full round with deep folds and finely carved embroidered features including lace. The lower section opening to reveal attendants pledging their loyalty. Height 7.75 inches (19.7 cm). Ivory triptychs of this type depicting a wide range of noteworthy individuals from history as well as subjects drawn from religious sources were produced from at least the mid-19th century, primarily from Paris and allegedly from Dieppe, although this has not been documented. A triptych figure depicting a queen was shown at the Paris Exposition of 1855 (height 21 cm) and is illustrated in Elfenbeinkunst, by P.W. Hartmann, 1998-99, Vienna, p. 197, executed by ivory carver “Perrin”.
