Lot 177
A FINE GOTHIC STYLE STAINED AND LEADED GLASS WINDOW OF ST. CHRISTOPHER & CHRIST, GERMAN 19TH CENTURY. Comprised of a single panel, Christopher carries the infant Christ across a river amidst Gothic architectural elements. 59.25 inches x 20 inches (150 x 51 cm). Saint Christopher was dropped from the Universal Calendar of Saints because his story (carrying Christ across a river) was determined to have a basis mostly in legend. Yet it would appear that in the late 3rd century there a Christopher who may well have been a soldier from the “Marmaritae” tribe of Africa, captured by the Romans, and then converted to Christianity, for which he was executed. And while he was obviously not alive during the time of Christ, such early converts who suffered severe persecution to the point of death can certainly be said to have been true Christ Bearers, as the Greek name (Khristophoros) from whence we get the English name Christopher, is derived. In this sense all early Christians who daily forged the turbulent rivers of persecution but kept Christ safe and alive in their hearts, can well share in the ancient name and image of St. Christopher.
