Lot 30
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE APOSTLE ST. JOHN, 18TH CENTURY. Depicted in this manner, with his hand held meditatively to his lips, he is generally called "John the Theologian in Silence" recalling the type of Christ as an angel and known as the "Good or Blessed Silence". The Holy Spirit represented here as a small winged angel whispers divine inspiration into the authors ear. He holds his gospel open to John 1:1 V NACHALYE BYE SLOVO, I SLOVO BYE, I BOG BYE SLOVO- In the beginning was the word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The left and right borders painted with family saints including Timofee and Daria (right). The fine handling of the garments and detailed hair point to a iconographer certainly above average skill. The upper border with an inscription in Old Church Slavonic identifying the subject as, "An Image of the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian." 11.75 inches x 10 inches (29.5 x 25.5 cm)
