A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE LORD ALMIGHTY, CIRCA 1890, PROBABLY ABRAMTSEVO. A finely painted icon depicting a half length Christ delivering a blessing and holding an open book of Gospels to John 13:34, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye also love one another as I have loved you.” This is the text often chosen for the icon of Christ which the groom processes with on his wedding day. The head of Christ encircled with the distinctive cross-form halo with abbreviated Greek inscription HO ON for Who Is as found in the book of Revelation 1:8, “I am the Alpha and the Omega says the Lord, Who Is and Who Was, and Who is to Come, the Almighty. The gold leafed background finely incised with repeating patterns of scrolling vines and the arched border ornately decorated with floral, vines and crosses and enameled in faux cloisonné. The overall style of Christ with large eyes and finely rendered garments echoes that of the famous Russian artist Mikhail Nesterov who participated at the Abramtsevo art colony as early as 1888. 12.2 x 10.6 inches (31 x 26.5cm).
