A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE APOSTLE SAINT JOHN. In this composition, with fingers held to his lips in meditation, he is called “Saint John in Silence” recalling the type of angel depicting Christ and called “The Good or Blessed Silence”. In the offered lot, an angel representing the Holy Spirit whispers inspiration into his ear. He holds an open book of Gospels, which begins “In the Beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God”. He is identified with an inscription at top as the Holy Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian. Overlaid with an ornate repousse silvered metal riza. 17.1 inches x 13.8 inches (43.6 x 35.3 cm).
