A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. JOASAPH OF BELGOROD, CIRCA 1911. A finely painted half-length image depicted in the office of Bishop, wearing an ornate miter with seed pearl decoration and icon of Christ and highly embroidered vestments. He delivers a blessing with his right hand and holds an ornate book of Gospels decorated with Christ at center and the four Evangelists in each corner. The gold leafed background and borders ornately incised and painted to simulate cloisonné enameling. The inscription along the base identifies him as The Holy Joasaph Bishop of Belgorod. Contained in a custom fitted heavily carved kiot (display case) with suspension device on verso (not shown). Icon 10.75 inches x 9 inches (27.5 x 23 cm) Overall including kiot 15.25 inches x 13.5 inches (39 x 34.5 cm). St. Joasaph was born on September 8, 1705 in the city of Priluki in the Poltava province of what is now the Ukraine. Born on the day of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin, he was given the name of Joachim. So great were his labors that he soon became known to Empress Elizabeth I, who summoned him to court and listened to his homilies with great attention, later calling him to hierarchal service. He was concerned with many things including the condition of churches and church vessels, with the beauty of services and icons and encouraged his priests to treat all sacred things with great awe. He died in December of 1754. His relics (remains) were found incorruptible and produced many miracles and he was canonized on September 4, 1911, with the active cooperation of Tsar Nicholas II.
