AN UNUSUALLY LARGE RUSSIAN PAINTED PORCELAIN ICON, 1848, PROBABLY ROSTOV. The round porcelain icon with sunken cavetto and flared rim, painted with a dramatic scene of the Transfiguration. Verso inscribed “painted in the year 1848 in the month of February”. Held in a silver frame with winged cherub suspension device, stamped 84. Painted porcelain icons of this size are considered unique and are rarely encountered. Diameter 6.5 inches (16.5 cm).
