AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON RELIQUARY OF ST. BARBARA, PERHAPS VELIKI USTYG, 18TH CENTURY. In this highly accomplished and painterly icon is depicted the female martyr Saint Barbara. She holds a martyrs palm and her attribute, a sword, which has an applied metal blade attached. In the top right corner God the Father calls to Barbara, rendered in a trace gilt inscription. The distant background displays a scene depicting the martyrdom of St. Barbara delicately rendered and further back still a castle more reminiscent perhaps of a Dutch or Baroque landscape. At mid upper right a hinged door opening to reveal a reserve containing a small pebble of wax wrapped in cotton. At lower right a gilt inscribed prayer relating that St. Barbara represented the Holy Trinity through the light of three windows, and asks for mercy in the enlightening of those praying in her name. 15.3 inches x10.8 inches (39.1 x 27.5 cm).
