A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE LORD SABAOTH, 19TH CENTURY. This complex rendering is often called The Fatherhood, and is essentially, in this composition, a New Testament Trinity image. Here God the Father is shown at center with Christ Immanuel upon His lap. Above Christ, the Holy Spirit depicted as a dove within an eight-pointed slava is set upon the Father’s breast. The ring which encompasses them displays Cherubim and Seraphim. The four outer points contain the symbols of the Four Evangelists. The top margin displays the Archangels. And the side borders with various family saints including Vasily, Daniel, Theodore, Andre, Yacob (James) and Anna. The inscription found in the upper corners reads, GOSPOD SAVAOF, Lord Sabaoth. A less frequently encountered subject in an excellent state of preservation.13.5 inches x 11.25 inches (34.5 x 28.5 cm).
