A VERY FINELY PAINTED RUSSIAN ICON OF ST. GEORGE, BORROWING FROM THE 17TH CENTURY STROGANOV SCHOOL STYLE. At center, St. George atop a white stallion thrusts his lance into the dragon below him. To the right, the king's daughter, Elisaba looks on as her parents watch from the battlements above. At top center, an angel places a martyrs crown on the warrior saint. The upper margin inscribed with an ornate condensed and abbreviated title for this icon reading "Image of the Holy Great Martyr George the Victorious". Borders with double raised Kovcheg, probably 2nd half 20th century. 11.75 inches x 9.5 inches (30 x 24 cm).
