Lot 535
A RUSSIAN ICON COVER, 19TH CENTURY. The silvered repousse and chased metal riza with attached gilded halos created for an icon of the resurrection with feast day surround. Such covers, called riza or more recently, oklad, sprung forth from the tradition of embellishing painted icons with precious metals in the form of ex-voto offerings. This eventually evolved to its present form, where the decorative metal cover overlays the entire icon with the exception of the flesh "areas" which are meant always to be exposed. 17.5 inches x 14.75 inches (44 x 37.5 cm).
Estimate:
$750 - 150
