A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE COMMUNION OF THE APOSTLES, 16TH CENTURY AND RESET INTO A LATER PANEL. This subject is often found above the Royal doors in early iconostasis, in which it is frequently depicted on an arched panel or two separate icons illustrating Christ dispensing the Eucharistic bread (left side) and the wine on the (right side) as in the offered lot. It is likely this icon was once part of an arched example as evidenced by the reconstructed lower left corner, and then inset into a later panel. 15.75 inches x 12 inches (40 x 30.5 cm).
