A UNIQUE CARVED IVORY, SILVER-GILT, ENAMELED AND GEMSTONE MOUNTED FIGURE OF A COAL MINER, 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY FRENCH. Well modeled as a working miner, the body and limbs in carved ivory set with red and blue gemstones holding a pick and lantern with a chased and enameled silver case on back with hinged covers opening to reveal an intricate three-dimensional cast silver diorama depicting a coal mine interior with laborers. The figure mounted on a squared tapering silver plinth with tooled borders, and gemset silver-gilt applied floral baskets on a cobalt blue enameled ground. Apparently unmarked. Height 8.75 inches (22 cm).
