Lot 81
AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE BLESSED HEAVEN MOTHER OF GOD, 18TH CENTURY. At center the Mother of God and Christ child both wearing crowns. The shaped frame in which they appear is edged in writing which begins, “What shall we call thee, O thou who art full of grace? Heaven: for thou hast dawned forth the Sun of Righteousness. Paradise: for thou hast blossomed forth the Flower of Immortality. Virgin: for thou hast remained incorrupt. Pure Mother: for thou hast held in thy holy embrace the Son, the God of all. Do beseech Him to save our souls." Subsequently this icon is also sometimes called “What Shall We Call Thee.” Out further still in the background areas are various symbols or titles for Mary such as the Burning Bush and the Ladder - on which God (Christ) descended to earth. The outer margin heavily inscribed with a lengthy prayer which begins, “Give me words for praying, O Lord…” The prototype (full length) for this icon is in the Archangel Cathedral in the Moscow Kremlin. A rarely encountered subject. 14 inches x 12 inches (35.5 x 30.7 cm).
