A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE GUARDIAN ANGEL WITH SAINTS, CIRCA 1900, IN THE 16TH CENTURY REVIVAL STYLE. At center, the Guardian Angel flanked by the Holy John the Forerunner (Baptist), his wings derive from the double meaning of the Greek word used to describe him in Mark 1:2- "Angelos", which means both "Messenger" and "Angel"; in Orthodoxy, John is often called a "Heavenly man and Earthly angel". On the right, the Roman Centurion, Longinus, who witnessed the crucifixion. On the top margin, the Holy Visage. Probably a Moscow Old Believer's workshop. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.75 cm).
