A RUSSIAN ICON OF SOPHIA WISDOM OF GOD WITH SELECTED SAINTS, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1890. At top center the main image depicts the Deisis variant, Sophia Wisdom of God. Immediately below is the image of the Seven Holy Sleeping Youths of Ephesus. These two main images are flanked on the left (top to bottom) by the image of the Meeting of the Lord, Saints Yacob (James), Anna, and the Archangel Michael, and below them Saints Andronicus and the Roman Centurion Longinus. On the right from top to bottom are: The Three Handed Mother of God, The Guardian Angel, the Venerable Ephraim, the Venerable Paisiy, The Holy Martyr Varus, and the Venerable Zoticus. The overall pallet, style and quality suggest a painter trained in one of the famous icon painting villages northeast of Moscow such as Mstera. 14 inches x 12.25 inches (36 x 31 cm).
