A FINE AND IMPOSING LATE GOTHIC CARVED AND POLYCHROMED WOOD FIGURE OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD, ULM, CIRCA 1470-1500.  Carved in three-quarters round, of good proportions with deep folds and cascading hair, the Virgin with elaborate carved crown cradling the infant Christ who holds a bunch of grapes and resting on a later velvet covered wood plinth. Hollowed back with minor worming and refreshed paint. Height 43 inches (109 cm) excluding later base.

Provenance:

Mrs. Wilhelmina Busch Woods, her estate auction of September 4th, 1955, Hohenried castle, Bavaria where acquired by Marshall Field & Company, Chicago, IL from whom purchased by the father of the present owner, circa 1956, according to the consignor.
Mr.s Wilhelmina Busch Woods was an heiress to the Anheiuser-Busch Brewing fortune. She was married to Texas born Sam Edison Woods, who was the United States' first post-war Councilor General in Munich. In September of 1955, the contents of their Munich suburbian estate Schloss Hohenried was sold at auction, drawing buyers worldwide to bid on the more than 3,000 items, most notably, a Flemish Gobelin tapestry.
