Lot 116
A FINE AND IMPRESSIVE GOTHIC CARVED PIETA, CIRCA 1470. Carved in three-quarters round of good proportions, with deep competently carved folds and drapery, the reposed body of Christ with distinctly carved cascading hair and high relief carved beard with traces of original polychrome on his left leg, chest and upper left arm. The lower section of verso partially hollowed, with minor worming and set on a later wood base. Height excluding the later base 27.5 inches (70 cm), width 19.5 inches (49.5 cm).
Estimate:
$15,000 - 25,000
€ 10,500 - 17,500
As to the origin of this highly accomplished Gothic carving, the majority of opinions suggest a Flemish sculptor, or perhaps Hispano-Flemish. A few others, however, have proposed a carver in the circle of the German sculptor Tilman Riemenschnieder.
