Lot 212
A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE JERUSALEM MOTHER OF GOD, 18TH CENTURY. A finely painted example of this Odigitriya variant. The Mother God gestures towards her infant son whom she cradles in her arms as he delivers a blessing while holding a scroll. Overlaid with a high relief repousse and chased gilded silver riza with elaborate haloes. Hallmarked Moscow circa 1780, indistinguishable makers mark and 84 silver standard. This is another of many images attributed to St. Luke and said to have been taken from Jerusalem to Constantinople in the 5th century and later presented to the Great Prince Vladimir after his conquest of the city of Kherson in 988. Vladimir, in turn, is said to have presented it to the people of Novgorod at the time of their conversion to Christianity and subsequent baptism. A less frequently encountered Mother of God image and of very high quality. 12.6 inches x 10.3 inches (32 x 26.5 cm).
