A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE SORROWFUL MOTHER OF GOD, END OF THE 17TH CENTURY. Finely painted following the traditional old canon. Here the Mother of God is turned inward towards her son Christ in an attitude of prayer and holds a cloth to dry her tears. The borders later overlaid with incised decorative silver (basma) and the head of the Virgin encircled with an elaborate gilded halo from which is suspended an ornately chased tsata. No doubt one part of a three piece Deisis grouping (left side). 12.25 inches x 10 inches (31 x 25.5 cm).
