A UNIQUE EMBROIDERED RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT PARASKEVA, END OF THE 18TH CENTURY. A unique icon depicting the popular female martyr saint receiving her crown from an angel, as Christ (top left) blesses her from heaven, she holds her right hand in a blessing gesture of the type favored by the Old Believers. In the background a church presumably dedicated to the saint (of which there were many in Russia) including a quite large complex in the city of Kazan. The borders and vestments finely embroidered and embellished with seed pearls, the background rendered in painted silk. Contained in a later glazed shadowbox (kiot). Icon 9 inches x 7.75 inches (22 x 19.7 cm).
