AN EXCEPTIONAL GERMAN CARVED IVORY AND SILVER MOUNTED TANKARD WITH ROMAN BATTLE SCENE, HANAU, CIRCA 1880-1890. The cylindrical form masterfully carved in high relief with a chaotic Roman battle scene of mounted horseman battling Turks below a silver compressed domical cover with embossed and chased horsemen in strapwork reserves and surmounted with a well carved Roman feathered helmet finial. The ivory handle emanating from an elephant head mount, well carved with an amusing seated soldier displaying sword and shield. The shaped silver foot embossed with lounging Roman soldiers within strapwork cartouches, and with later Augsburg marks. Height 16.5 inches (42 cm).
