A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF SELECTED SAINTS, CIRCA 1890.  At top center within a medallion Christ Emmanuel and below a gathering of nine saints each identified by an inscription in their halo. From left to right top to bottom they are, the Holy Venerable Theodore, the Holy Great Martyr Katherine, the Holy Venerable Martyr Anastasia, the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky, the Holy Aleksei Metropolitan of Moscow, the Holy Nicholas Wonder-Worker, the Holy John the Forerunner, and the Holy Gregory. The gilt background stippled with a pattern of scrolling vines and the borders ornately painted to simulate cloisonné enamel, probably a Moscow workshop by a Palekh or Mstera trained painter. In an excellent state of preservation. 14 inches x 12.1 inches (35.5 x 31 cm).
