A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT MAKARIY UNZHENSKIY, 19TH CENTURY. At center the monastic saint is shown full length holding a scroll which begins, "I praise you Lord...and bless [the Savior?] Christ, who has kept us all hitherto in the truth..." He is identified by the gilt inscription flanking his head as The Venerable Unzhenskiy. The borders rendered with 18 different scenes from the life of the saint beginning with his birth (upper left) and concluding with his burial (lower right) and each with corresponding inscriptions identifying each scene. At top center within a medallion the head of Christ. Makariy Unzhenskiy, is also called Makariy of Zheltovodsk (Yellow Water [Lake]) and Unzhensk. 17.5 x 14.75 inches (44.5 x 37.5 cm).
