A RUSSIAN ICON OF CHRIST, 20TH CENTURY. Overlaid with an ornate Art Nouveau silver riza, the robes of Christ overlaid in filigree, the borders of the halo chased with scrolling foliage, the outer margins of the riza with applied scrolling floral designs. Christ holds an open book of Gospels to John 13:34. Bears the hallmark for Moscow, circa 1908-1917, and bears the Cyrillic maker's mark "DS." Contained in a gilt-lined shadowbox frame (kiot). The icon 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).
