A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MONK SAINT TIKHON LUKHOVSKY, WITH IMPERIAL PROVENANCE, CIRCA 1680.  Here Tikhon is shown wearing the monastic garment called the Great Skema, a sign of his advanced monastic spiritual life. With his right hand he delivers a blessing with his fingers held in the configuration favored by the Old Believers and in his left hand he holds a scroll which begins, “Brothers, pray, do not be sad, but…” In the upper left corner Christ delivers a blessing from heaven depicted as stylized clouds. The entire image overlaid with silver repoussé basma and above the head of Tikhon is a condensed and abbreviated title plaque which mixes Greek (Hagios) and Slavic (Prepodobnuiy) Tikhon – The Holy Venerable Tikhon. The verso with label of the exhibition of Christian Artifacts from the collection of Nikolai Mikhailovich Postnikov and with a label of “Church of the Consolidated Regiment of His Imperial Majesty -- # 515 -- Division ----.” 12.25 inches x 10 inches (31 x 25.5 cm).
