A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE DESCENT INTO HADES AND RESURRECTION, STROGANOV SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY. At center Christ stands above the broken gates of Hades and grasps the hand of Adam while Eve looks on, both rising out of their sarcophagi. Behind them the righteous men and women of the Old Testament are released from bondage, in the lower left corner a pair of angels binds Hades and in the lower right corner Christ is shown rising out of His tomb while Roman guards sleep. The upper margin inscribed with the title, "THE RESURRECTION OF CHRIST." In an excellent state of preservation. 12.25 x 10.75 inches (31.5 x 27.5 cm).
