A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE SMOLENSK MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1680.  Finely painted on a gilt ground and echoing the style made popular at the Moscow Armory School under the tutelage of Simon Ushakov. The borders later painted with the Venerable monastic Saint Makariy (left) and the Venerable Mary of Egypt. The entire image overlaid with an 18th century silver repoussé and chased oklad with attached haloes and seed pearl and gemstone embellished openwork riza. The riza hallmarked Nizhni-Novgorod, dated 1779. In an excellent state of preservation. 12.75 inches x 10.5 inches (32.5 x 26.5 cm).
