A VERY FINE AND INTERESTING OLD BELIEVERS RUSSIAN ICON OF THE NINE MARTYRS OF KYZIKOS, 18TH CENTURY. In this finely painted icon, the nine martyrs who died for their faith in the fourth century are depicted beneath an image of Christ who bestows the nine crowns of martyrdom on them. Within each halo is inscribed their Slavonic names, Theognes, Rufus, Antipater, Theostichus, Artemas, Magnus, Theodotus, Thaumasius, and Philemon. On the lower margin is a lengthy prayer from a “service” (Russian sluzhba) to the Nine Martyrs of Kyzikos. It begins, "Prayer to the Holy Nine Martyrs..." and it continues with: "O All-praised Holy Martyrs, valiant suffering servants of Christ Theognes, Rufus, Antipater, Theostichus, Artemas, Magnus, Theodotus, Thaumasius, and Philemon, who for Christ's sake...." etc. On the upper margin the subject is identified by the abbreviated inscription, IMAGE [OF THE] HOLY MARTYRS NINE THOSE AT KYZ-[IKOS]. The borders with family saints comprising the Bishop Saint John, the Venerable Paisius, Ulita and Kirik, and the Holy Female Martyr Antonina. The Nine Martyrs are commemorated on April 29. In an excellent state of preservation. 15 inches x 13.25 inches (38 x 33.5 cm).
