A VERY FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE EXALTATION OF THE CROSS, NEVYANSK, CIRCA 1800.  Finely painted and at center the Bishop Makarius of Jerusalem (left) and Bishop Sylvester (right), raise the cross of Christ up. To the left, wearing a crown and holding a scepter, is the Empress Helena and below her the Emperor Constantine. Below an acolyte holds a candle, and on the right a Deacon swings a censer as other figures look on. The border at top inscribed with the title, "IMAGE OF THE ELEVATION OF THE HONORABLE CROSS OF THE LORD." 12.25 inches x 10 inches (31 x 25.5 cm).
