Lot 342
AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE UNBURNT THORNBUSH MOTHER OF GOD, PROBABLY PALEKH, CIRCA 1800 WITH LATER RESTORATIONS.  At center the standard depiction of the Mother of God upon a blue four-pointed star resting atop a red four-pointed star.  In this example, additional scenes have been added. At top center within an oval horizontal cartouche is a reclining nude figure (Adam? left), in the center the tablets displaying the Ten Commandments and another figure is depicted at the right. Perhaps the reclining nude figure is supposed to represent death (possibly the death of Adam), followed by the tablets (the law of Moses), and the figure on the right may be Jesus, a kind of "history of salvation" summary:  "Death came by Adam, then came the Law, then came "Christ." Below at center is the scene of the angel in the "fiery furnace" with the three "children of Israel." The corners are painted with the Four Evangelists and the borders painted with various Old Testament prophets rendered within teardrop shaped reserves. The inner kovcheg painted in red and with ornate gilt scroll work. 17 inches x 14 inches (43 x 36 cm).
Estimate:  $800 - 1,200   € 560 - 840
