AN IMPRESSIVE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE RESURRECTION AND DESCENT, SCENES OF THE PASSION, AND CHURCH FEAST DAYS, PALEKH, 19TH CENTURY. Executed in the miniature technique, at center Christ descends into Hades, freeing from bondage all the righteous of the Old Testament, and above stands atop his empty grave (sarcophagus). Surrounding the central image are 12 smaller images depicting the Passion of Christ beginning with the Last Supper and concluding with the Placement in the Tomb. Further out still are 16 images representing the major Church Feast Days, each identified by a corresponding inscription. The corners painted with the four Evangelists and the panel constructed with a double kovcheg. Verso with a label of the NARODHI GALERIE V PRAZE - the National Gallery in Prague. 14 inches x 12 inches (35.5 x 31 cm).
