AN OVERSIZED OLD BELIEVERS RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINTS ULITA AND KIRIK WITH LIFE SCENES AND ADDITIONAL IMAGERY, 19TH CENTURY. At center, Ulita stands delivering a blessing and holding a scroll with her son Kirik standing beneath her. She is flanked by the Venerable Makariy of Kolyazynsky (left) and the Old Testament prophet Elijah (right). The three scenes immediately adjacent to the central image on both the left and right side depict scenes of the martyrdom of Ulita and Kirik. The upper margin with five reserves each painted with different imagery including the Kazan Mother of God, St. Nicholas of Mozhisk, the Pokrov Mother of God, the 12 Apostles, and the Unburnt Thornbush Mother of God. The lower margin also with five reserves and each painted with different images including St. George slaying the dragon, the Archangel Michael, the Three Hierarchs, and two reserves painted with selected saints. The borders painted with six additional saints including Gregory, Pelegia, Arkhip, Mary the Martyr, the Apostle James, and Evdokia. 20.75 inches x 17.5 inches (52.5 x 44.5 cm).
