AN IMPRESSIVE 19TH CENTURY DANISH SILVER PRESENTATION DRINKING HORN, CHR. RASMUSSEN 1886, KJØBENHAVN. As presented to Professor Rasmus B. Anderson, the curved cow horn form with sculpted frieze of Norse figures within gothic arched porticos and surmounted by a domed cover with a figural finial of Freye, the Norse Goddess of Harvest, and resting on a winged Griffin support above a lobed end rectangular base plate and further raised on a conforming ebonized wood plinth with presentation inscription [to] “Professor R. B. Anderson [from] M.B at Thor seirede over Midgaardsormen 17 Decbr 1888”. Stamped Marks for Chr. Rasmussen, .925, three tower date mark, and Simon Groth (1863-1904) assay master mark. Net weight of silver 48.68 troy oz. Height 17.5 inches (44.5 cm).

Rasmus Bjorn Anderson (1846-1936) was an American author, professor, and diplomat. He brought to popular attention the idea that Viking explorers discovered the New World and was the originator of Leif Erikson Day (Wikipedia) and during the period of 1885 to 1889, when the above lot was presented, Anderson was serving as the United States Ambassador to Denmark.
