A RUSSIAN ICON OF THE ANNUNCIATION, WORKSHOP OF YAKOV E. EPANECHNIKOV, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1890.  Realistically rendered in oil and in the Western style, the robe of the Virgin with ornately painted faux gilt embroidery. The border also ornately incised and scrolling foliage and painted to simulate cloisonné enameling. Within an oval horizontal cartouche on the lower margin is the title of this subject inscribed in gilt letters, "The BLAGOVYESHCHENIE OF THE MOST HOLY MOTHER OF GOD." Verso of icon with workshop stamp of Yaakov Ephemovich Epanechnikov (ЕПАНЕЧНИКОВЫ), with Moscow address and under the Imperial Warrant. 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).

Together with iconographers Gurianov and Chirikov, the workshop of Epanechnikov was one of the most celebrated Moscow workshops producing icons at the end of the 19th century for a wide variety of clientele including the Royal Family.
