A FINE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE HOLY SEVEN YOUTHS WHO SLEPT AT EPHESUS, MOSCOW, CIRCA 1900. This icon depicts the seven young Christians who sought refuge in a cave from the persecutions of Emperor Decius in the third century, and they were walled up alive in a cave and went into a miraculous sleep. After 200 years had passed, the seven sleepers awoke and were found by the citizens of Ephesus, which in the passage of two centuries had become Christian. The finely painted landscape vegetation and use of extensive gilt highlighting on the vestments clearly suggests a Moscow workshop employing painters trained in the village of Mstera. The borders ornately incised and painted with faux cloisonné enamel. The upper margin inscribed for the title for this subject in Slavonic, "THE HOLY SEVEN YOUTHS WHO SLEPT AT EPHESUS." 12.25 inches x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5 cm).
Estimate:  $1,500 - 2,500   € 1,050 - 1,750
Price Realized: $3,750.00
