A GERMAN CARVED IVORY AND WOOD FIGURE, ATTRIBUTED TO STEFAN FOGER (1726-1770). Carved in full round, the figure with tattered clothing, traveling hat, carved wood basket on his back and carved wooden shoes set on an integral wood base. Height 9.75 inches (24.7 cm). The wood and ivory (or bone) figures by Stefan Foger (1726-1770) come directly out of the tradition of Simon Troger in the depiction of mendicant subjects in tattered clothing. The offered lot is nearly identical in style and technique to a pair of figures in the Tyrolean Landesmuseum collection in Innsbruck, Austria, and illustrated and discussed by Simon Troger und andere ElfenbeinkunstlerAus Tirol, by Eugen Philippovich, 1961, Innsbruck.
