AN EXCEPTIONALLY CARVED IVORY BOX AND COVER, 18TH CENTURY, PERHAPS MUGHAL.  Finely carved overall the lid depicting a gathering of people around a shrine with European style buildings in the background and palm trees back further still. The border deeply carved with scrolling foliage and the sides carved with a continuous rural mountainous village scene interspersed with buildings displaying thatched roofs. The underside of base extensively carved with a scene of a man holding a rock in one hand and holding his other hand upright in the air. In the background a palm trees, figures near a city wall and within the walled city domed shaped buildings with trident finials. Diameter 4.1 inches (10.3 cm), depth 1.1 inch (3 cm)
