A SCARCE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE VENERABLE MACARIUS WITH LIFE SCENES, 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY PALEKH. At center a full length image of Macarius, wearing the monastic Great Skema, delivering a blessing and holding a scroll. He is surrounded by four scenes from his life including, The Birth of the Venerable Macarius, The Child Macarius being drawn to church by the ringing of its bell, Macarius’ monastery being destroyed by fire during the invasion of khan Olug Moxammat of Kazan, and the Falling asleep of Macarius. The borders with inscriptions identifying each scene and at top center an image of the Old Testament Trinity-name sake of his second Monastery. The abbreviated Old Church Slavonic inscription along the top border reads, Преподобный Макарий Унженский Желтоводский Чудотворец, meaning The Venerable Makariy of the Yellow Lake and the Unzha-Miracle Worker. A rare subject never before encountered by our firm. 12.25 x 10.5 inches (31 x 26.5cm).
