A FINE RUSSIAN NARRATIVE ICON OF THE BIRTH OF THE MOTHER OF GOD, CIRCA 1900. Executed in the 16th century Novgorod Revival style, in this classically rendered icon the top margin shows Joakhim on the far left and Anna on the far right both separately receiving the heavenly news that Anna has conceived. At center they meet and embrace at the Gate called “Golden” as related in the Apocryphal Gospel. Below left Anna reclines on a bed after having given birth to Mary-the Mother of God, while servants attend to her and below prepare to bathe the newborn child.
