A VERY FINE AMERICAN RENAISSANCE REVIVAL "J.I. CASE" BURLED WALNUT BEDROOM SUITE, CIRCA 1870, ATTRIBUTED TO BERKEY & GAY, GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN. Comprising a high-back bedstead and deep well dresser of exhibition quality. The headboard with architecturally modeled crest above an arched burl wood panel flanked by incised classical pilasters and rectilinear beveled panels with burled and paneled rails joined to the headboard with arched and burled top rail. The dressing bureau modeled en suite with the bed and containing a full length dressing mirror flanked by columnar pedestals supporting candle stand plinths raised on modified concave form pyramids above paneled 3 drawer pedestals. (Two corner top elements absent). Provenance: Purchased by Jerome Increase Case (1819-1891) in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century for the master bedroom of his home located on South Main Street, Racine, Wisconsin, where it resided until 1974. Lot is accompanied by a letter of authenticity with attached photograph of the bed, signed and dated October 28, 1974 by Roy Case (grandson). Jerome Increase Case (1819-1891) opened the "Racine Threshing Machine Works" in 1843 in Racine, Wisconsin, later to be the J.I. Case company, manufacturers of agricultural equipment and tractors.
