AN INTERESTING CARVED WOOD FIGURE OF ST. NICHOLAS, RUSSIAN, 18TH CENTURY. Carved in full round, here Nicholas is shown full length dressed in the office of a Bishop wearing a mitre, holding a book of Gospels, and delivering a blessing. Traces of gilding and polychrome underneath the darkened surface. Such carvings are most frequently found as the central image of triptychs depicting the same subject. Height 19 inches (48.5 cm).
