A LARGE RUSSIAN ICON OF THE APOSTLE KONDRAT, 19TH CENTURY. Colorfully painted, here the apostle is shown wearing a bishop's stole and holding a book of Gospels. He turns inward toward Christ in an attitude of prayer. The upper margin inscribed in Slavonic identifying him as "THE HOLY APOSTLE KONRAD." He is another apostle of the "70" and is said to have been the Bishop of Athens. Some writers identify him as the first Christian Apologist. The size and composition of this icon which suggests that it was once placed in an iconostasis, probably in the diesis row. 35 inches x 13.75 inches (89 x 35 cm). (Unillustrated)
