Lot 38
AN INTERESTING RUSSIAN ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD JOY TO ALL WHO SUFFER, 19TH CENTURY. In this variant the Mother of God holding the infant Christ is depicted at center, a typical presentation. However, instead of the usual crowd of suffering humans holding scrolls inscribed with their petitions, the Virgin and Child are depicted in the offered icon amongst a gathering of 51 various saints and angels, with God the Father at top delivering a blessing. Generally these types of icons were specially ordered with the customer specifying the specific saints and angels they would like included in the grouping. Often the name saints are related to those commissioning the icon, or just as often, they are particular saints which are highly venerated in a specific locale. The extensive use of gold leaf and the overall style point towards those icons produced in the gold producing region near Nevyansk, on the eastern slope of the middle Urals. 17.6 inches x 15 inches (44.7 x 38 cm)
Estimate:  $1,000 - 1,500
Price Realized: $2,880.00
